Step Four: Classroom orientation

An eight-hour orientation class must be completed prior to your working at a Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare acute care facility. These classes will be scheduled on an as needed basis. The Central Staffing Office will contact the agencies to let them know of the dates.

The Orientation Class will allow you to become familiar with some of the skills that require “hands-on.” These include restraints, Glucometer, IV pumps, enteral feeding pumps, PCA pumps, ADU (medication dispensing unit), code cart review, and our documentation system, as appropriate for your role.

You must complete the self study portion of the orientation prior to attending a classroom orientation. The content in the class builds on the self-study materials and you will not be able to participate effectively if you do not come prepared. Bring the completed, signed, and dated Orientation Checklist, Confidentiality Statement  and Expectations for the Journey Commitment Statement with you to class.

Step Five: On-Site Department/Facility Orientation (Your First Work Shift)

After you have completed the self-study and classroom portions of your orientation, you are eligible to work at a WFH facility. When you come to the unit for your first shift, you can expect to meet unit staff, tour the unit and find out some things that are specific to that unit.

When you arrive, you will complete the unit orientation portion of the RN/LPN Agency Initial Orientation and Competency Form. During your first shift, you must be signed off on the Clinical Competencies listed on this checklist. Your department may also have department specific orientation competencies that you must complete.
The competencies may be validated by the charge nurse or a designated preceptor. The completed form should be faxed to the Central Staffing Office at (414)-465-3444 where it will be placed in your file.
