Pregnancy and Birthing

At Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare - St. Francis, we believe that having a baby should be a personalized special event for both mom and her family. That's why we've designed a program that focuses on your needs and aims to make your birth and early parenting experience healthy and memorable.

Meeting Your Family's Needs
Our remodeled Birth Center, Family Care Unit, Breastfeeding Support Center and Prenatal Assessment Center, provide just the right balance of comfort and individual care. Our expert staff includes a full range of specialized physicians, nurse practitioners, midwives, nurses and educators who are highly trained and experienced in the care of moms and babies. We encourage you to tour our unit and meet our nursing staff.

Newborn Nursery
Every parent dreams of having a healthy baby. But if problems do arise, it's good to know that St. Francis offers a Level II Newborn Nursery. Here a highly skilled nursing and support staff work with the latest technology to ensure that your newborn receives the most advanced medical care possible.

'Your Special Nurse' Program
Each mom who delivers her baby at St. Francis Family Birth Center may participate in our 'Your Special Nurse' program, which partners one of our highly skilled and trained nurses with a mom for the duration of her pregnancy. This program provides families and mothers with top quality care and a positive experience from early pregnancy through delivery.

Through regular conversations, tours and visits, your special nurse will provide you with advice, options and answers to all those normal questions and concerns that arise during pregnancy. He or she will also be your resource to prenatal classes, sibling preparation, delivery options, pain management choices, arranging any cultural or social preferences you may have and providing guidance in the care of your newborn.

Through family-centered care, we want everyone involved to have the most positive birthing experience possible. 'Your Special Nurse' program is just one more way we can help families prepare for one of life's greatest moments.

Baby Friendly Designation
Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare hospitals are dedicated to providing baby friendly environments and do so in many ways.

As it relates to breastfeeding, The Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative is a global program sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to encourage and recognize hospitals and birthing centers that offer an optimal level of care for breastfeeding mothers and families. Hospitals may apply for this designation, and two of Wheaton Franciscan hospitals have done so.

Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare –Elmbrook Memorial and St. Francis have specific “Baby Friendly Hospital” designations, awarded after undergoing an extensive accreditation process.
They are two of only five hospitals in Wisconsin and fewer than 75 in the United States with this distinction.
